Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with France's air force in a combined operation targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the UK's MoD.

The facility, located using reconnaissance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was located in mountains just above Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a several entry passages leading to the depot... initial indications suggest the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the operation on Saturday evening and all the aircraft made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - also known as Daesh - imposed militant control over parts of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation demonstrates our UK leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eradicate any revival of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary John Healey said.

UK warplanes have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of IS following its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank all the members of British forces involved in this mission for their expertise and their valour," Healey said. "They were among thousands of British personnel deployed over the festive period. This operation, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who endanger our security, demonstrates how our armed forces are always on standby, all year round, ensuring Britain's security domestically and strong abroad."

During December, the American forces conducted what it described as a "large-scale strike" on IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. reports IS still has between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in both countries.
