The anticipation about The Game Awards reached a fever pitch, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious image of a strange statue. The secret has been revealed. Larian Studios is developing a fresh Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was debuted with a daring trailer that included intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the literal unleashing of hell.
Moving Beyond Original Sin
For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. Larian warned that a third Original Sin game to its beloved RPGs is not on the cards right now.
Nevertheless, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This distinction implies that the team is likely building a more action-oriented experience rather than another turn-based title. Currently, this is speculation, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is highly rated and arguably it kicked off the contemporary revival of deep computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for rich lore, player agency, and flexible progression—elements that later were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is familiar fare, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the immense freedom bestowed upon the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is packed with niche playthroughs that are viable if you're playing as a particular class or origin with a unique decision path.
The series is also famously permissive, enabling players to improvise throughout the entire experience. Most missions can be solved in multiple ways, frequently in surprising fashion.
- You might solve a puzzle because you recalled something a dog told you.
- Or, you could bypass a challenge by using the world itself in a unorthodox way.
A New Chapter Begins
It is these creative systems that have cemented the series to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games ever made. Now, the RPG community can get ready for a new entry in this legendary franchise.
