At least 11 of the weather balloons, containing 18,000 packages of contraband cigarettes, have since been recovered

Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for several hours when dozens of them entered the national airspace.

Flight Disruptions

The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights impacting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.

Law Enforcement Actions

Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the aviation facility.

As many as 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend passed through the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and close to the frontier with Belarus.

Smuggled Items Retrieved

No fewer than 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.

International Illegal Trade

Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."

So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.

Regional Consequences

Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.

Smuggling Techniques

When questioned about why smugglers utilize a method that is highly susceptible to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."

Border Protection Aims

Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that such operations become unprofitable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."

Regional Security Context

Such border infiltrations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across the continent.

Parallel situations in neighboring countries have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
